Ford Motor Co. and the United Auto Workers union are investing a combined $6 million to be the lead donors for a $50 million plan to expand the original home of Motown Records in Detroit.
Motown’s unassuming “Hitsville U.S.A.” house in Detroit launched the careers of such pop singers as Marvin Gaye, the Jackson Five, Smokey Robinson, the Supremes and Stevie Wonder. The venue is a major tourist attraction in southeast Michigan.
The expansion will turn the original site into a 50,000 sq-ft complex that includes a Ford performance theater, interactive exhibits, advanced recording studios and meeting spaces. Project organizers have not yet announced groundbreaking or opening dates.
