Ford Motor Co. will take the wraps off its all-new Bronco SUV sometime next spring.

The carmaker announced the timing in a teaser video this week that highlights previous versions of the nameplate, which was produced from 1966 to 1996.

The new SUV will share a body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive platform with the Ranger midsize pickup truck that debuted late last year. The rugged 4x4 trucks are fitted with front and rear solid axles.

Reports earlier this week say the Bronco also will feature an off-road navigation system to help motorists find their way back when straying beyond conventionally mapped areas. The technology already is available on select models outside the U.S.

Other rumored goodies include a removable roof and doors, real-time tire pressure monitoring, a convoy communication system that lets a group of off-roaders talk on a party line and “Adventure Capture.” The latter is said to be a data/image recorder system that allows enthusiasts to document their trips.
