Ford Motor Co. is launching a "customer satisfaction" program this month to replace and/or fortify throttle cables that could stick in 467,700 of its 2000-2003 model Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable sedans, The Detroit News reports.
Affected cars are equipped with Duratec engines. The throttle cables in those vehicles could come loose during routine under-hood maintenance. If that happens, the cable might bind and hold the throttle about 28% open after the accelerator pedal is released, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
NHTSA reports at least 100 complaints from owners who say the problem made their cars unexpectedly more difficult to stop. The flaw has been blamed for five crashes.
The agency opened a probe into the problem eight months ago. But the agency decided last month not to order a recall after Ford agreed to fix the cables. Dealers will replace any damaged cables and install a mounting reinforcement clip in all vehicles.
