Ford Motor Co. is preparing to recall 355,000 of its 2005-2011 model Ford Crown Victoria (including police cars), Lincoln Town Car and Mercury Grand Marquis large sedans to fix a defect that could cause loss of steering.

The campaign, which will begin in late October, involves U.S. cars sold in the 22-state "snow belt" and the District of Columbia.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says severe corrosion could cause the steering column linkage to collapse. Ford dealers will inspect and replace any necessary components.
