Ford Motor Co. plans to hire 800 salaried employees in the U.S. over the next six months in addition to the 2,200 new jobs the company announced earlier this year, The Detroit News reports.

Most of the latest jobs are in engineering, information technology, manufacturing and product development.

Ford tells the News that the hiring spree is needed to meet rising demand for its cars and trucks. The company started 2013 with 28,400 white-collar workers in North America, most of them in the U.S.

The 3,000-employee increase to Ford's salaried payroll will be the largest for any year in more than a decade. The newspaper notes that the company also said previously it expects to hire more than 3,000 hourly workers in 2013.
