Ford Motor Co. confirms it will offer an updated version of its international EcoSport subcompact crossover/SUV in the U.S. in 2018. The plan had been rumored since February.

The EcoSport, which shares a platform with the larger Fiesta, will compete in the U.A. market against the current Buick Encore, Chevrolet Trax, Honda H-RV, Jeep Renegade and Subaru Crosstrek. Toyota, Hyundai and Kia also are readying entries for the growing segment.

Ford launched the first-generation EcoSport in South America in 2003. The second-generation model, which is sold in 140 countries, bowed in 2013. Global sales topped 250,000 units last year and has delivered 1.7 million worldwide since its introduction.

Ford produces the EcoSport, in Brazil, India, Russia and Thailand. The U.S. variant will be shipped from Ford’s plant in Chenai, India.

The U.S. EcoSport will be powered by either a turbocharged 1.0-liter 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine or a 2.0-liter 4-banger EcoBoost with standard four-wheel drive. Both engines will be paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Other updates for the U.S. include a new suspension, unique exterior and revamped interior. The latter will include a host of connectivity and telematics features, including an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple iPhone and Google Android smartphone compatibility.
