Ford Motor Co. is giving its Edge crossover vehicle a mid-cycle makeover that includes styling updates, a host of driver-assist technologies, a new transmission and, for the first time, an ST variant tuned by the Ford Performance team.

The carmaker took the wraps off the 2019-model midsize crossovers on Thursday, ahead of next week’s public unveiling at the Detroit auto show. Sales will begin this summer.

Styling tweaks include a wider grille and new fascia. The rear features a revised liftgate, new LED taillamps and a dual exhaust opening. Interior changes are highlighted by a redesigned center console with a rotary gear shifter.

Ford claims the new Edge will have the most standard driver-assist systems in its class. The list includes forward-collision warning, dynamic-brake support, pre-collision assist, pedestrian detection, blind-spot detection, cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping alert and assist, automatic high beams and hill-start assist.

Among the available options are adaptive cruise-control with lane-centering capability and evasive-steering assist, which helps drivers steer around stopped or slowing vehicles. Another feature, called post-collision braking, applies moderate brake pressure following a collision to help vehicles avoid or reduce the severity of a secondary impact.

The 2019 Edge also comes standard with FordPass Connect (formerly Sync Connect), a wireless charging pad and a wi-fi hotspot that can connect as many as 10 devices. A 12-speaker B&O Play premium audio system is optional.

The base model will continue to be powered by Ford’s 2.0-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine, but output will be bumped up slightly to 250 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission will replace the current 6-speed unit.

The new Edge ST, which sports special badging and a model-specific grille, will be powered by a re-tuned 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 engine. The upgraded engine kicks out 335-hp and 380 lb-ft of torque, up 6% and 9%, respectively.

All-wheel drive with selectable traction control is standard. Other available goodies include a performance brake package, upgraded suspension and paddle shifters that allow drivers to shift the 8-speed transmission manually.

Ford introduced the Edge in 2006 and last redesigned it in 2015. Sales in the U.S. last year rose 6% to 142,600 units.
