Ford Motor Co. is recalling about 197,000 of its 2004-2007 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans to repair third-row seat mounts that could corrode.
The recall covers models sold or registered in 21 "snowbelt" states that use road salt in the winter.
The fold-down third-row seat is held in its normal seating position by a latch. The mechanism connects to a mounting plate sealed inside the rear wheel well. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a poor seal could allow the mounting system to corrode. If so, it may become impossible to fully secure the seat in its normal upright position.
NHTSA reports no accidents or injuries related to the defect. All recalled models were produced at Ford's assembly plant in Oakville, Ont.
