Ford Motor Co. is preparing to fix a rust problem in 385,800 of its 2001-2004 model Escape small SUVs that could cause the front suspension to fail.
The recall covers U.S. "snow-belt" states, the District of Columbia and eastern Canada.
Ford says excessive suspension corrosion may cause a lower control arm to separate from the front subframe, which also supports the engine and transmission, thus impairing the ability to steer. The company reports one crash caused by the problem.
