Ford Motor Co. is launching two recalls of 1.1 million crossover/SUVs to remedy power steering problems that have been linked to at least 20 crashes. Two more recalls will fix unrelated problems in another 279,200 cars.
The primary campaign covers 915,200 Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner compact crossover vehicles made during the 2008-2011 model years. Those vehicles have a torque sensor that may abruptly turn off the steering system's power assist.
A similar power steering problem this one caused by a loose connection that can make power assist cut in and out has prompted a second campaign involving 195,500 of the company's 2011-2013 model Explorer midsize SUVs.
Separately, Ford is recalling 196,600 of its 2010-2014 Taurus large sedans to fix a license plate lighting fixture that could corrode and start a fire.
The company also is launching a fourth campaign to replace 82,600 all-weather floor mats in 2006-2011 model Ford Fusion sedans and Lincoln MKZ sport sedans. Ford says the mats can jam the accelerator pedal and cause unintended acceleration.
