Ford Motor Co. is recalling 83,300 front-wheel-drive vehicles in the U.S. to check for an improperly installed part that could allow a halfshaft to detach and cut off power to the wheels.
The campaign, which is expected to begin at the end of August, covers certain 2012-2014 Edge crossovers; 2013-2014 Ford Taurus, Lincoln MKS and Ford Police Interceptor sedans; and 2013-2014 Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT crossovers.
Ford says a clip that retains the right-hand halfshaft may not have been fully seated during assembly. If the clip loosens, the halfshaft could move outward over time, creating noise, damaging the shaft's splines and eventually disconnecting from the intermediate shaft.
If the two shafts separate, power from the engine will no longer reach either front wheel. The vehicle also could roll away if parked with the transmission in Park.
