Ford Motor Co. sold 1.02 million Focus compacts in 2012, thus making the car the world's top-selling nameplate for the second consecutive year, according to R.L. Polk & Co.

The company, which had two other vehicles in the top six, says the Polk data is proof that its "One Ford" strategy of developing global models is working.

The Toyota Corolla compact car placed second with sales of 872,800 units. That tally doesn't include the Auris, as the car is known in Europe, or the Matrix hatchback body style. Toyota says that if all Corolla variants are included, the car outsold the Focus by 186,000 units.

Ford's F-Series fullsize pickup truck, which is sold only in North America, was next at 785,600 units.

The Wuling Sunshine minivan (768,900 units) ranked fourth last year. The vehicle is built in China by a three-way joint venture of General Motors, SAIC Motors and Wuling.

Next on the list were the Toyota Camry midsize sedan (729,800 units) and Ford Fiesta (723,100 units). Ford notes that the Fiesta was the world's top-selling subcompact in 2012.
