Ford Motor Co. says the Chariot shuttle service it bought last year will expand its service to New York City in August.

In addition to its home city of San Francisco, Chariot already operates in Austin, Tex., and Seattle, Wash. Ford says the service aims to be doing business in eight cities worldwide by the end of 2107.

Chariot uses 12-passenger Ford Transit vans to transfer riders between their homes and area transit hubs. The system taps into real-time traffic data to set pickup and delivery routes. In New York, the service will begin with a flat $4 trip fee for service in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

New Yorkers also can suggest additional service areas they feel would benefit from Chariot. When enough riders sign up to support and fund a proposed route, as many Chariots as needed will be dispatched to service the area.
