Ford Motor Co. will produce the next-generation Edge crossover at its Canadian factory in Oakville, Ont.
The plant is expected to begin making the new model later this year and will export the vehicles to more than 60 countries.
Ford said in September it would spend C$700 million ($637 million) to prepare the facility to make several models for global markets. The expansion includes $142 million in support funds from Ontario and the Canadian federal government.
The Oakville plant, which employs 2,800 workers, makes the current Ford Edge and larger Flex crossover and the Lincoln MKX and MKT crossovers.
The company notes that global demand for crossovers and SUVs outside North America more than doubled in 2013 and is expected to expand another 30% this year.
