Ford Motor Co. is recalling 4,500 of its Kuga small SUVs in South Africa after nearly 50 reports of engine compartment fires, one of which has been linked to a fatality. The Kuga is sold as the Escape in the U.S.
Ford tells reporters the problem appears to involve only models built in Spain between the end of 2012 and early 2014 and equipped with Ford’s 1.6-liter Ecoboost engine. It isn’t clear whether that engine is the same as the 1.6-liter engine offered in U.S.-built versions of the Escape over the same interval.
Ford says the South African issue appears to be caused by overheating due to a lack of coolant circulation, which can crack the engine cylinder head and cause oil to leak onto hot engine components.
