Fiat SpA tells union leaders in Italy that it will invest almost €1 billion to prepare its factory in Mirafiori, Italy, to make the company's upcoming Maserati SUV and other models.
Fiat abandoned plans a year ago to build the Maserati, introduced as the Kubang concept in 2011, at its Chrysler Group Jefferson Avenue plant in Detroit.
In January CEO Sergio Marchionne said the Mirafiori plant would eventually build two Maserati models for export to the U.S. Media reports at the time speculated that the facility also might build an Alfa Romeo crossover.
The plan for Mirafiori replaces an earlier scheme to build small Fiat and Jeep crossovers at the facility. Those models will be produced at Fiat's Melfi plant instead.
Mirafiori has capacity to make 300,000 vehicles per year. But it has been operating only a few days per month since April 2012, according to Reuters. The news service says the factory assembled just 62,600 vehicles in 2011.
