A year ago Fiat SpA and Mazda Motor Corp. finalized a plan to co-develop two variants of a new sports car and sell the Japanese-made vehicles under their own brands.

Mazda will use its version of the rear-drive car to replace its MX-5 Miata sports car. Initial reports assumed Fiat's iteration would join the company's Alfa Romeo line as a replacement for the Alfa Spider.

But CEO Sergio Marchionne says Fiat hasn't decided how to brand its version of the roadster. Automotive News Europe cites unnamed sources who say the sports car will carry the Fiat rather than Alfa nameplate.

"Maybe we will, maybe we won't," Marchionne tells reporters at the Geneva auto show. Either way, he emphasizes, the project is on track.
