Ferrari Superfast Lives Up to Its Name

Ferrari NV says the 812 Superfast coupe will be the most powerful series production car in the luxury marque’s 70-year history.

The mid-front-engine 812 is an updated version of the F12 Berlinetta, powered by a 6.5-liter V-12 engine that kicks out 789 hp and 530 lb-ft of torque—80% of which is available at 3,500 rpm. Ferrari says the car can rocket from zero to 100 kph (62 mph) in 2.9 seconds on its way to a top speed of 210 mph.

As with the F12’s slightly smaller 6.3-liter V-12 that makes 731 hp and 508 lb-ft, the Superfast’s V-12 engine is naturally aspirated. But the new engine still outguns Ferrari’s latest turbocharged units used in the GTC4 Lusso, California T and 488 GTB supercars.

The 812’s naturally aspirated engine benefits from direct fuel injection and variable-length intake tracts that boost volumetric efficiency. The engine is teamed with an upgraded and faster-shifting version of the F12's 7-speed dual-clutch transmission with revised gear ratios to handle the extra power.

The new model will be the first Ferrari to get electric power steering, which the carmaker says will work in tandem with features such as slide-slip control to enhance driving dynamics. An updated version of Ferrari’s four-wheel-steering system also is on tap.

Other goodies include new aerodynamic elements in the rear pillars and a redesigned front end with active aerodynamic flaps. Both features are designed to enhance downforce.

Ferrari will publicly unveil the 812 next month at the Geneva auto show.
