Ferrari SpA says the 488 Pista high-performance version of its 488 GTB supercar is faster, lighter and more powerful than the base model.

The new Pista (which means "track" in Italian) is powered by a specially tuned version of the 488 GTB’s twin-turbo 3.9-liter V-8 engine that generates 710 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque, up about 50 hp and 8 lb-ft. This makes it the most powerful V-8 engine ever used in a street-legal Ferrari—and is virtually identical to the output of the 4.0-liter V-8 in the McLaren 720S.

Mated with a 7-speed automatic engine, the Ferrari V-8 propels the Pista from zero to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds and to 124 mph in 7.6 seconds. Top speed is listed at 211 mph. The 488 GTB needs three seconds to hit 62 mph and tops out at 205 mph.

The Pista benefits from a 200-lb weight savings—coming in at a svelte 2,821 lbs—and improved aerodynamics over the 488 GTB. The reduced weight is attributed to lighter engine and exhaust components, greater use of carbon fiber body parts and a stripped-down interior.

Aerodynamic highlights include a Formula One-inspired S-duct and redesigned diffusers up front and a longer, taller rear spoiler. The enhancements yield 20% greater downforce for Pista over the GTB.

The Pista also introduces Ferrari’s Dynamic Enhancer software system that adjusts the pressure of the brake calipers to aid cornering maneuvers. Ferrari describes the technology as a world first.

Ferrari will publicly unveil the 488 Pista next month at the Geneva auto show. Pricing is expected to start at about $300,000.
