Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is recalling nearly 1.3 million of its fullsize Ram pickup trucks worldwide to correct a software error that could prevent airbags from deploying.
The company says a sharp blow to the underbody that triggers a rollover crash also could temporarily switch off the side airbags and seatbelt pretensioners. FCA reports one fatality and two injuries linked to the problem.
The recall targets Ram 1500 and 2500 pickups made during the 2013-2016 model years, and Ram 3500 pickups from the 2014-2016 model years. About 80% of affected vehicles are in the U.S. FCA says dealers will begin reprogramming the airbag control modules in June.
