Lamborghini SpA’s Huracan Performante supercar has set a new record for a production car at Germany’s grueling Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit, lapping the 12.8-mile course in six minutes and 52 seconds.

Lamborghini test driver Marco Mapelli piloted the Performante coupe to the record run, reaching a top speed of 188 mph and easily eclipsing the previous record of six minutes and 57 seconds set in 2013 by a Porsche 918 Spyder. Mapelli also posted a sub-7-minute time (6:59.7) around the “Ring” in a Lambo Aventador SuperVeloce in 2015.

The Huracan Performante will be publicly unveiled next week at the Geneva auto show. The high-performance variant of the Huracan is powered by a specially tuned version of Lambo’s 5.2-liter V-10 engine, which is fitted with a dual fuel-injection system. The car also introduces the carmaker’s ALA (Aerodynamica Lamborghini Attiva) active aerodynamic technology, which uses electric motors to control several small flaps and wings around the vehicle.

The Performante also benefits from using lighter materials than the Huracan. Other upgrades include a retuned suspension, stickier tires and special electronic controllers.
