Joe Ashton, a former vice president of the United Auto Workers union’s General Motors department, has resigned as the union’s first representative on the GM board.
Ashton’s departure comes as federal prosecutors look into evidence that UAW and company officials at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV took some $4.5 million in funds intended for a jointly operated worker training facility. Investigators reportedly are examining a similar training program at GM.
Last month The Detroit News said investigators were “interested” in Ashton and Cindy Estrada, who succeeded him at the UAW when he retired from the union in 2014. Aston has not been named or charged in the probe.
The investigation has leveled criminal charges against four people associated with the FCA training center, including a former FCA analyst and two former UAW executives.
