Tatsuro Toyoda, who briefly headed Toyota Motor Corp. in the 1990s, has died of pneumonia at age 88.

A son of Toyota founder Kiichiro Toyota, Tatsuro was named president in 1992. He resigned the post three years later after a prolonged hospitalization, reportedly for hypertension.

Tatsuro was best-known for serving as president of New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., a venture Toyota formed in 1984 with General Motors Co. The NUMMI factory in Fremont, Calif., is now the home assembly plant for Tesla Inc.​​​​​
