Ford Motor Co. high-performance 2014 Fiesta ST five-door hatchback will arrive in the U.S. later this year with the same powertrain that drives the European version: a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine and 6-speed manual transmission.
Ford rates the American ST's output at 197 hp and 202 lb-ft of torque. That compares with 120 hp and 112 lb-ft of torque for the standard Fiesta's naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four-banger.
The Fiesta ST has earned a fuel economy rating of 26 mpg city/35 mpg highway/29 mpg combined from the Environmental Protection Agency. The sporty front-drive model is expected to have a base price of $22,200.
The ST will compete with such pocket rockets as the Chevrolet Sonic RS, Fiat 500 Abarth, Honda Civic Si, Hyundai Veloster Turbo and Mini Cooper S.
In addition to its more powerful engine, the Fiesta ST is distinguished from its standard sibling by a mesh front grille and a unique body kit that features a front spoiler, special wheels and a stiffer suspension. Recaro sport seats are optional.
The Fiesta ST was engineered in Germany, but U.S. versions will be assembled at Ford's factory in Cuautitlan, Mexico. The facility also builds the standard Fiesta for the North American market.
