Fuel refiners must blend 16.6 billion gallons of renewable fuels into the gasoline they sell this year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency affirms.
That volume, which amounts to just under 10% of America's fuel supply, is mandated by the Energy Independence and Security Act.
Most of the biofuel is corn-based ethanol. But the law also specifies that this year's total output include 1.3 billion gallons of biodiesel, 2.8 billion gallons of advanced biofuels and 6 million gallons of cellulosic biofuels.
The EPA has been reviewing this year's target because of concerns about the so-called E10 blend wall. Most modern vehicles can tolerate gasoline containing 10% ethanol, but few are equipped to handle higher concentrations. The agency says it will propose "flexibilities" in calculating overall biofuel volume and the use of advanced fuels for 2014.
Federal law requires that annual renewable fuel volume targets steadily increase to an overall level of 36 billion gallons in 2022.
