Despite their “emotional” appeal, the two cars have been slow sellers, notes VW board member Arno Antlitz. He tells Autocar that business “is not always about continuing cars from one generation to the next.”
The Arteon luxury sedan, Atlas crossover/SUV and upcoming ID electric cars could take the place of the Beetle and Scirocco as halo models in VW’s lineup if the two older vehicles are killed, Arteon says. But media reports speculate that the convertible variant of the Beetle will continue, independent of the coupe.
VW sold just over 25,000 Beetles coupes and convertibles worldwide last year and about half that many Sciroccos, a model not offered in the U.S. Their combined total for 2016 is less than the monthly volume of the Golf small car.
