Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus unit took the wraps off a stylish and flexible concept crossover vehicle on Monday at the Detroit auto show.

The carmaker describes the vehicle, which it calls the LF-1 Limitless, as the start of a new genre: a flagship crossover. Developed by Toyota’s Calty Design Research studio in California, the sporty LF-1 features a variety of autonomous driving and connected car technologies.

The vehicle’s architecture also is designed to support a variety of powertrains, ranging from a standalone piston engine and hybrid-electric system to a plug-in hybrid, all-electric or fuel cell unit. Lexus previously said all its models worldwide will be available with some sort of electrified powertrain by 2025.

The LF-1’s footprint is similar to that of a Range Rover, but the Lexus concept sits much lower and sports a coupe-like roofline. The interior features multiple touchscreens—including what’s described as a 4D navigation screen—and a host of steering wheel-mounted controls in place of traditional buttons and switches.
