The independent website, which doesn’t cite its sources, says the new powerplant will replace Ford’s current 5.0-liter “Coyote” V-8. The naturally aspirated 4.8-liter mill will combine direct and port fuel-injection systems to improve fuel economy and reduce engine knock, according to the report. A higher compression ratio also is expected to help boost power.
The 5.0-liter Coyote with multi-port fuel injection has a 11:1 compression ratio and generates 435 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque in the current Mustang GT. The new 4.8-liter unit will retain the twin independent variable valve timing system—allowing the timing of the intake and exhaust valves to be changed independently—that Ford introduced in the Coyote V-8.
Ford is expected to build the new engine at its Essex engine plant in Windsor, Ont. In November the carmaker pledged to invest C$700 million ($522 million) in the facility as part of a a labor agreement reached with Canada’s Unifor labor union. At the time, Unifor President Jerry Dias hinted that Ford would produce a new high-tech engine at the facility.
