Ray LaHood, who has led the U.S. Dept. of Transportation since 2009, tendered his resignation today.
The lone Republican in President Barack Obama's cabinet, LaHood says he will leave when his successor is confirmed. A replacement has not yet been nominated.
LaHood oversaw tough new fuel economy standards, an effort he describes as helping to bring the transportation sector "into the 21st century." He also has focused on the perils of distracted driving, advocating that states ban cellphone use by drivers.
