Denso Corp. says its new laser radar system is simpler, smaller and more easily adaptable across vehicle models.

The unit measures about 5.2 inches square and is 1.8 inches deep. Denso says its design features a smaller lens and a simpler laser-generating system than its previous devices. The design also uses a single circuit board that integrates signal processing and electronic control.

Denso has offered few details about the system. The technology debuted in Japan at the end of last year in the Daihatsu Move small car. In that model, the unit monitors objects ahead of the vehicle, using the data to warn the driver of an impending crash and activate the car's low-speed brake assist system.
