Daimler AG says it will spend 1.1 billion yuan ($158 million) to build a second product development facility in Beijing for the Chinese market.
The company opened its first tech center in Beijing four years ago. The new facility (pictured) is expected to begin operations in 2020. The two-story building will be located near the carmaker’s engine and vehicle assembly complex in Beijing, where it will share existing test track, pilot plant and test bench facilities.
Daimler says the 55,000 sq-meter (592,000 sq-ft) center will help accelerate the localization of its products for China, its largest market. The building will have capacity to house a staff of 600.
The facility will work primarily on new-energy technologies, powertrain and chassis development, emissions, NVH, durability testing and in-vehicle air quality, according to the company.
