Daimler AG has broken ground on a €300 million factory in Sebes, Romania, that will begin making a new 9-speed automatic transmission by 2016.
The company launched production of the new transmission at its facility in Unterturkheim outside Stuttgart, Germany, last year.
Daimler did not reveal its capacity target for the plant. The facility will be operated by Daimler's 13-year-old Star Transmission SRL subsidiary, which makes gearbox components in Cugir and 5- and 7-speed dual-clutch transmissions in Sebes.
