Toyota Motors Corp.'s Daihatsu Motor affiliate is recalling a record 891,500 minivehicles in Japan to fix a flaw that could prevent the engine from starting.
The company did not offer details about the defect. But it says the campaign involves 11 of its models produced between 2005 and 2010.
Daihatsu is Japan's largest maker of minivehicles, which are powered by engines displacing 660 cc or less. In 2012 Japan's minivehicle market totaled 1.98 million units, about one-third of them Daihatsu models.
