Continental AG is introducing a compact head-up display that uses its own screen rather than the windshield to cut installation space requirements by nearly 50%.

The so-called "combiner" HUD uses a small, transparent plastic screen instead of the windshield. Conti says the system is suitable for a wide range of vehicles but is especially appealing for small or sporty cars with limited room.

The company, which has been supplying color HUDs since 2003, notes that the new system also makes HUD technology more accessible to low-production specialty vehicles.

Conti's combiner HUD sits atop the IP binnacle and slightly below the driver's line of sight. The device's safety advantages offset the need for drivers to adjust their glance slightly, according to the company.
