Registrations of new commercial vehicles across Europe fell to 131,900 units in January from 146,900 units a year earlier.

In the U.K., sales of trucks and buses in January rose 5% to 19,200 units. But volume dropped in the region's other major markets, including France (-10% to 33,600 vehicles), Germany (-16% to 19,900 units), Italy (-24% to 9,500 units) and Spain (-16% to 5,900 units).

Across Europe, January demand for light-duty commercial vehicles slid 9% to 108,200 units. Sales jumped 12% to 16,000 vehicles in the U.K. but declined in other big markets.

Europewide registrations of medium- and heavy-duty trucks tumbled 17% to 21,000 units in January. Bus volume grew 4% to 2,700 units.
