Chrysler Group LLC will replace its current Tigershark 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in 2016 with a revamped and more efficient variant called Hurricane, according to Automotive News. Chrysler has declined to comment.
The newspaper, which cites Chrysler documents, says the new design will retain the same aluminum block and add MultiAir II, the electro-hydraulically actuated variable valve timing system from Chrysler owner Fiat SpA.
The technology already has been added to the 2.4-liter Tigershark engine offered in the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. Chrysler said earlier this year the modification helps boost the Cherokee's fuel economy 45% compared with the Jeep Liberty it replaces.
Analysts speculate the Hurricane engine could debut in the all-new Jeep Patriot and a sibling Chrysler small crossover SUV, both of which are due in 2015 as 2016 models.
