Chrysler Group LLC is preparing to recall 792,300 Jeep SUVs worldwide to update ignition switches that can by knocked out of the "run" position by the driver's knee.
The campaign will involve certain 2006-2007 Jeep Commander and 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. Chrysler says its engineers are still looking for a remedy to the problem, which can turn off the engine and disable the power steering, power brakes and airbag systems.
Until it finalizes a repair, Chrysler urges owners of the affected vehicles to remove the key from their key rings and use it separately. The company also advises adjusting the driver's seat to provide clearance between the key and their knee.
Chrysler says the recall will address a flaw unrelated to a global campaign announced in 2011 and expanded last month to fix the same phenomenon in 944,400 of the company's minivans and crossover vehicles.
