Chrysler Group LLC plans a global recall of SUVs to reroute wiring to the lighted vanity mirror that could short-circuit and cause a fire.
The campaign involves about 894,700 of the company's 2011-2014 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee models.
The problem is caused by mirror mounting screws that could damage the mirror's wiring. Chrysler says the issue exists only in SUVs that have had their vanity mirrors or headliners removed and reinstalled. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports the problem also may affect vehicles that weren't properly assembled at the factory.
To cover all existing and possible future problems, Chrysler dealers will fit all recalled vehicles with a spacer that reroutes the visor wiring.
Chrysler says 651,000 affected vehicles are in the U.S. About 68,700 were sold in Canada and Mexico. Another 175,000 are in multiple overseas markets.
