Chrysler Recalls 469,000 Jeeps Worldwide

Next month Chrysler Group LLC will begin recalling 469,000 large Jeeps made between 2005 and 2010 to fix a flaw that could cause the vehicles to shift into neutral spontaneously upon startup.
The campaign involves Jeep Grand Cherokees produced in 2005-2010 and Jeep Commanders made in 2006-2010. Chrysler says 295,000 of the SUVs are in the U.S., 32,700 are in Canada and Mexico, and 141,000 are elsewhere around the world.
All affected models have a four-wheel-drive system. Chrysler attributes the problem to cracks in a circuit board that controls an actuator for the 4WD system's transfer case. The flaw could signal the transfer case to shift into neutral as the engine starts, thus allowing the vehicle to roll away.
Rather than replace the circuit boards, Chrysler dealers will reflash software used by the 4WD system's final drive controller. The updated software will prevent unintended shifting caused by bogus signals, according to the company.
