Chrysler Group LLC is adding another 278,000 SUVs and pickup trucks to an earlier U.S. recall of 44,000 units to fix a faulty nut that could cause the rear axle to lock up. The new campaign also involves 92,100 vehicles sold in other countries.

The latest recall, which will begin in March, covers 2009 model Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango SUVs, 2009-2012 model Ram 1500 pickups and 2009-2011 Dodge Dakota pickups.

The recalled vehicles have rear pinion nuts that were fitted with undersized pinion splines. The flaw can allow unwanted movement between the nut and companion flange, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Chrysler says its dealers will install a pinion nut retainer.

Chrysler's initial recall in last October over the same problem covered only Dodge Dakota and Ram 1500 trucks produced in 2009.
