Chrysler Group LLC is adding 696,000 units to an earlier recall of minivans and crossovers whose ignition switches could slip out of the "run" position, thus cutting off power to the engine.
In 2011 the company issued a worldwide recall of 248,400 of its 2010 model Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans and Dodge Journey crossovers to fix the same problem. The expanded campaign adds vehicles produced during the 2008-2009 model years.
Chrysler says its dealers will install a new detent ring to help prevent the switch's spring from pushing the ignition key from "on" to "accessory."
Separately, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration continues to investigate a similar issue in about 525,000 of Chrysler's 2005-2006 model Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2006-2007 model Commander SUVs.
