Fiat SpA's Chrysler unit is withdrawing all requests for government aid for its Canadian factories in Ontario and will fully fund their upgrades on its own.

The company says it is dropping the quest for aid because the effort has become so politically charged.

Canada reportedly had offered some US$639 million in assistance to help retool Chrysler's minivan facility in Windsor and carmaking factory in Brampton. But last month CEO Sergio Marchionne responded by threatening to move the facilities' next-generation models to other countries unless Canada increased its support.
