Chrysler Group LLC isn't likely to crank up production of its Jeep Cherokee SUV until the fourth quarter, according to Automotive News.

The newspaper cites union sources who say production has been delayed by efforts to improve fit-and-finish issues and tweak the behavior of the vehicle's new 9-speed automatic transmission.

The midsize Cherokee, which is being built at Jeep's retooled Toledo Assembly Complex in Ohio, originally was scheduled to begin low-volume sales in May. The vehicle has been in pilot production for weeks, according to AN's sources.

The controversially styled model is the first Jeep to ride on a Fiat-developed platform (the chassis also is used by the Dodge Dart small car). Chrysler justifies the delay by noting that the all-new Cherokee also is being built in a new body shop using a new production process.
