Chinese carmaker Qoros Auto Co. Ltd.'s small sedan is headed for European sales after scoring top marks in European crash testing.
The Qoros Sedan 3 earned a five-star score in crash tests required by Euro NCAP, a Brussels-based safety association.
Other Chinese makers so far have had less success in the tests, with results of one test of a Chinese-made SUV described by German testers as "catastrophic." Comparable German-built small sedans typically score five stars in the tests, so the Qoros result is a significant achievement.
Qoros, a six-year-old joint venture between China's Chery Automobile Co. and investment group Israel Corp., seeks to differentiate itself by building vehicles that refute the reputation of Chinese cars as being poorly built imitations of European, Japanese and U.S. vehicles.
Built at a new factory near Shanghai, the Qoros Sedan 3 will go on sale in coming weeks in China and eastern Europe before expanding into other European markets. The €20,000 ($26,900) sedan is the first of seven models planned by Qoros.
