General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet Bolt electric car was selected the 2017 North American Car of the Year by a group of 57 automotive journalists this morning to kick off the Detroit auto show. The Bolt beat two luxury sedans—Hyundai’s Genesis G90 and Volvo’s S90—for the title.

The Honda Ridgeline was named Truck of the Year. It edged out a pair of pickups: the Ford F-150 and Nissan Titan.

Chrysler’s all-new Chrysler Pacifica minivan took home top honors in the award's utility category, which was added this year. The other finalists were the Jaguar F-Pace and Mazda CX-9.

To be eligible, a vehicle must be redesigned or substantially changed and be on sale by the start of 2017.
