General Motors Co unveiled the Chevrolet SS, its first rear-drive performance sedan since the Pontiac G8 went out of production in 2009.
The SS, which will go on sale in the U.S. late this year, shares its platform with the Chevy Camaro sport coupe. A NASCAR version of the sedan will make its debut during the Daytona 500 race on Sunday.
The civilian SS will be powered by the 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 found in the 2013 Chevrolet Corvette. In the SS, the engine will deliver 415 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission and 3.27:1 rear axle. GM estimates a zero-60 mph acceleration time of 5 seconds.
Standard equipment on the SS includes MacPherson struts in front and an independent multilink setup in back, Brembo brakes with ventilated 355-mm rotors and four-pot front calipers, 19-inch forged aluminum wheels and light-weight aluminum hood and deck lid.
Among the standard electronic features in the SS are a color head-up display, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, rear-vision camera with cross-traffic alert and side blind zone alert.
