General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet unit plans to roll out big discounts on its redesigned 2014 Silverado fullsize pickup truck and most of its other models in March, according to Automotive News.

The newspaper cites a GM memo to dealers, which describes the American market program as an "unprecedented promotional assault." AN notes that analysts worry the blitz may signal a loss of resolve to match production to actual market demand.

The truck initiative will offer all Silverado customers a price normally reserved for its suppliers' employees: $150 above dealer invoice, plus destination charge.

Chevy will kick off a second campaign next month that offers similar or greater discounts on all other 2014 models except the Corvette and the Pontiac G8-derived SS sport sedan, according to AN.

The campaigns come after GM sales in the U.S. fell 12% in January and are expected to drop again this month. AN reported two weeks ago that industrywide dealer inventories were about 50% higher than the normal 60-day supply. The newspaper said GM led the pack with a 114-day supply of unsold vehicles.
