The director and the head of human resources for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. unit in France have been taken hostage by the country's CGT union.

The militants tells Bloomberg News the two executives will be held until the U.S. tiremaker agrees to begin "real negotiations" about benefits for nearly 1,200 workers at a factory in Amiens-Nord that the U.S. company wants to close.

Goodyear announce plans for the shutdown a year ago after five years of fruitless talks with CGT about increasing productivity at the facility. The union has staged sporadic demonstrations against the closure, including one in March that resulted in injuries to 19 police officers.

Bloomberg notes that CGT also has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. against Goodyear, which is based in Ohio.
