The Canadian Auto Workers union says it has started contract negotiations with General Motors Co. at the company's CAMI factory in Ingersoll, Ont.
The contract doesn't expire until September, but the parties aim to reach an agreement by March 24. The union represents 2,500 hourly works at the facility, which built 305,400 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain crossover vehicles last year.
The Ingersoll plant, a former joint venture with Suzuki Motor Corp., operates under a separate contract than the four-year Canadian accord the CAW and GM reached last year. Union leaders at CAMI have said they will seek a pact that follows the national pattern, which froze base wages and set lower starting pay for new hires.
The company unveiled plans last week to invest US$250 to make the Ingersoll factory into a flexible manufacturing facility by the end of 2014.
