Caterham Cars, the British maker of retro-styled two-seaters, says it will introduce a bare-bones version of its iconic sports car this autumn at a price of about $25,900.
The company notes that its high-performance Caterham 7 sports car began in 1957 as the Lotus 7. That model was created by Colin Chapman as an ultra-light, no-frills race car adapted for the road. Caterham, which acquired rights to produce the topless Lotus in 1973, says the upcoming entry-level model was inspired by the original car's simple-design philosophy.
Caterham currently sells the 7 in a wide range of trim with engines ranging in output from 105 hp to 263 hp. The ultra-light car is noted for its spectacular grip and extraordinary acceleration. One version weighs about 1,100 lbs and can zip from zero to 60 mph in less than three seconds.
The company says the new model will be equipped with a new "super compact" engine designed to meet upcoming EU 6 emission standards. Caterham predicts the car will be its most fuel-efficient model ever.
The new powertrain is being developed by the company's Caterham Technology & Innovation engineering consultancy.
